How we calculate grades

Formulas, validation, rounding and limitations used across Easy Grade Tools.

One calculation engine

The calculators, result tables and CSV exports use the same decimal-arithmetic engine. Inputs accept non-negative decimal numbers with up to six decimal places. Possible points must be greater than zero. Question-count mode uses a whole number of questions, up to 1,000.

A points score is earned ÷ possible × 100. Extra credit is disabled initially; explicitly enabling it permits earned points and percentages above the ordinary maximum. Negative scores are not supported.

Course grades

Total-points mode sums earned points and possible points before dividing. Weighted mode calculates each category from its assessment point totals, multiplies the category percentage by its weight and combines the contributions. Weights must total 100%.

Current-grade mode excludes explicitly ungraded work and optionally excludes missing work. It normalizes across categories with included scores and displays their combined category weight. Completed-course mode requires all assessment states to be resolved. Empty graded scores are errors, not zeroes.

Final-exam targets

With weight expressed as a fraction, required final score = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. A known final produces current × (1 − weight) + final × weight. A 0% final has no effect; at 100%, only the final score matters.

Required scores round upward at the selected precision. A negative requirement means the target is already secured under the entered assumptions. A result above 100% remains visible as above the ordinary maximum. This tool does not implement nested exam categories, grade replacement or retakes.

Rounding and classification

Display precision defaults to two decimal places with half-up rounding. By default, scale thresholds are compared against the unrounded percentage. The explicit round-before-grading option applies the chosen precision before classification.

Each grade band has an inclusive lower cutoff. The next higher band provides its exclusive upper limit. A non-percentage scale must include zero, and labels and thresholds must be unique. Built-in scales are examples, not official institution or country policies.

Rubrics and batch summaries

Points-based rubrics combine earned and possible points. Weighted rubrics combine criterion percentages using weights totaling 100%. Achievement-level selection enters points; the teacher assesses the evidence.

The batch mean averages individual percentages, and the median uses the middle sorted percentage or the mean of the two central values. These are descriptive summaries, not combined course grades. Duplicate rows are preserved. Results export only when all rows are valid.

Checking a result

Every tool includes a worked example and an explanation of the settings that affect its result. Compare the inputs, status of missing work, scale and rounding policy before recording an official grade. Report a reproducible calculation problem through the contact page without sending student information.
